How To make Homemade Alo Palak

To make homemade Aloo Palak, which is a delicious Indian dish made with spinach and potatoes, you can follow the recipe below:


  • 2 cups spinach leaves, washed and chopped
  • 2 medium-sized potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 1 medium-sized onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tomatoes, finely chopped
  • 2-3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1-inch piece of ginger, grated
  • 1 green chili, finely chopped (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder (adjust to taste)
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tablespoons oil or ghee (clarified butter)
  • Water as needed


  1. Heat oil or ghee in a large pan or skillet over medium heat.
  2. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter.
  3. Add minced garlic, grated ginger, and chopped green chili (if using). Sauté for a minute until fragrant.
  4. Add finely chopped onions and cook until they turn golden brown.
  5. Add chopped tomatoes and cook until they become soft and mushy.
  6. Add turmeric powder, coriander powder, red chili powder, and salt. Mix well and cook for a minute.
  7. Add cubed potatoes to the pan and mix them with the spice mixture.
  8. Add a little water, cover the pan, and let the potatoes cook for about 5-7 minutes until they are partially cooked.
  9. Once the potatoes are partially cooked, add the chopped spinach leaves to the pan.
  10. Mix well, cover, and cook for another 5-7 minutes until the potatoes are fully cooked and the spinach has wilted.
  11. Check the seasoning and adjust if necessary.
  12. Remove from heat and serve hot with roti (Indian bread) or rice.
